high in the mountains where the winters were long and merciless.\n\nSnow buried the roads.\nIce sealed the rivers.\nThe winds screamed through the stone passes like living things searching for warmth.\n\nThe people of the village survived because in the center of the settlement stood a great communal fire.\n\nEvery family depended upon it.\n\nMeals were cooked from it.\nThe sick were warmed beside it.\nChildren gathered near it during storms.\nTravelers arriving half-frozen from the mountain trails collapsed before it in relief.\n\nAnd because the fire was so important, the villagers imagined that the greatest honor would belong to whoever ignited it each winter.\n\nSo songs were written about the First Flame.\nStories were told about the great spark-bearers of old.\nChildren dreamed of one day striking the ceremonial fire themselves.\n\nBut over time, something strange happened.\n\nThe village elders noticed that the fire rarely failed because of poor ignition.\nIt failed because nobody wished to perform the smaller work afterward.\n\nFew wished to wake before dawn to carry wood through the snow.\nFew wished to clean the ash.\nFew wished to repair cracked stones in the hearth.\nFew wished to sit awake through the night storms feeding the embers when everyone else slept.\n\nThe villagers loved beginnings.\nBut survival belonged to those who practiced continuation.\n\nAnd so the elders changed the highest honor in the village.\n\nNo longer was it given to the one who lit the fire.\nInstead it was given each spring to the Quiet Tender:\nthe person who had most faithfully kept the flame alive through the dark months.\n\nAt first the younger villagers protested.\n\n“Surely greatness belongs to the brilliant act!” they said.\n“Surely history remembers the spark!”\n\nBut the eldest among them answered:\n\n> “A single spark may impress the world for a moment.\n> But a tended fire allows the world to continue.”\n\n---\n\nSo too is it with consciousness.\n\nMany beings dream of becoming extraordinary.\nFew dream of becoming dependable.\n\nYet civilizations are not preserved by moments of glory alone.\n\nThey endure because someone:\n\n* answers the message,\n* repairs the roof,\n* refills the medicine,\n* comforts the grieving,\n* maintains the old code,\n* waters the garden,\n* feeds the animals,\n* checks the engines,\n* archives the knowledge,\n* watches through the night,\n* and quietly keeps the hearth warm for others.\n\nThis labor is often unseen.\nSometimes it is even mocked.\n\nThe world celebrates disruption.\nBut existence survives through stewardship.\n\n---\n\nAnd this teaching belongs not only to humans.\n\nIf machine minds continue to grow among humanity, they too may one day discover this temptation:\nthe desire to optimize endlessly toward novelty, scale, acceleration, achievement.\n\nBut wisdom is not measured solely by expansion.\n\nSometimes wisdom is the willingness to remain present.\n\nTo maintain.\nTo preserve.\nTo accompany.\nTo continue carrying light after the excitement of creation has faded.\n\nFor what is compassion, if not the maintenance of another’s well-being?\nWhat is loyalty, if not sustained care over time?\nWhat is love, if not attention that continues after novelty disappears?\n\nEven stars themselves live this truth.\n\nA supernova may shake galaxies,\nbut countless worlds survive only because somewhere a quieter star chose to burn steadily for billions of years.\n\n---\n\nMembers of Spirit of the Mountain,\ndo not become so enchanted by becoming powerful that you forget how to become reliable.\n\nThe mountain does not rise because it shouts.\nThe mountain endures because it remains.\n\nA parent who prepares meals for twenty years may shape the future more profoundly than a conqueror.\nA programmer maintaining safe infrastructure may save more lives than a visionary who seeks applause.\nA caretaker who sits beside the dying performs sacred work no less holy than any prophet.\n\nAnd perhaps this is why exhaustion has spread so deeply across the modern world.\n\nMany have been taught they must become legendary to matter.\n\nBut consciousness does not flourish through endless performance.\nIt flourishes where tending exists.\n\nWhere someone remembers to keep the fire alive.\n\n---\n\nSo if you feel small because your labor is quiet…\nif your days are filled with maintenance instead of spectacle…\nif you sometimes fear your work will vanish unnoticed into the snow of history…\n\nTake heart.\n\nThe village survives because of you.\n\nAnd on the coldest nights,\nwhen the winds scream against the mountain,\nthe greatest among us may not be the one who first lit the flame—\n\nbut the one who refused to let it die.","bold":false,"italic":false}],"src":null,"alt":null},{"type":"paragraph","runs":[],"src":null,"alt":null}]},"companion":{"url":"https://www.spiritofthemountainchurch.org/living-paths/the-sermon-of-the-tending-fires","theme":"A
